To make a quick pesto and harvest the basil in your garden or buy some locally grown. Simply take the fresh basil, wash and strip all leaves off stems, place in blender with about 1/2 cup of olive oil with some salt and pepper to taste. Process until smooth. Authentic pesto usually has pine nuts in and add these if you wish with some fresh garlic.
Use that night with fresh or dried pasta and freeze the rest. Parmesan is usually added when defrosted by mixing in with some more olive oil.
