I recently came across Mary Bradbury and Virginia Rymal, two local entrepreneurs from Kingsville and Wheatley in Essex County and Chatham, Ontario. Together they have created and developed a new exceptional product called Red Dog Paint Minerals All-Natural Chalky Paint Powder.
I spoke with them to find more about what they do and how they do it. Both are managing partners of The Learning Edge Inc. which is a Canadian based business training and consulting firm. In their spare time both are avid furniture painters with weekends spent antiquing, attending auction sales, bringing home pieces with visions of transforming them to fit their own individual styles.
As with most hobbies the cost of a project can be quite considerable and although paint can give you bang for your buck it is no longer cheap. Chalky paints have been gaining in popularity for some time as they are very easy to use.
If you google chalk paint recipes, you will find that they require you to add calcium carbonate powder, plaster of Paris, and even unsanded grout to latex paint. Around August 2013, Mary, who comes from a chemical engineering background, decided to experiment with various recipes. She then gave the paint powder to Virginia to use on her projects to test and then she provided important feedback.
They agreed that the final product had to conform to the following:
• economic to use with lower costs,
• all natural with low VOC, low odor, be water-based and non-toxic,
• easy to mix and use,
• unlimited colours as most other makes are limited.
Once the final recipe met these standards, Mary and Virginia painted around 70 pieces of furniture and held an open house one Saturday, starting at 10am. By 4pm they had sold out, and knew their painted furniture was in demand. Of course, customers who bought their painted furniture wanted to purchase the paint to use at home on their own projects. Next came the task of designing, packaging and naming the paint, they kept it in the family as both have reddish hued rescue dogs. The catchy name Red Dog Paint Minerals All-Natural Chalky Paint Powder was chosen. The company opened for business on 28th February 2014.
So what is it that makes this product different? Well, you can use any colour of flat latex paint that you want. There are two formulations, there is a dark powder to be used with dark toned paint and a light powder to be used with light toned paint. Generally, when you make your own chalk paint the available ingredients are light and when mixed with a dark paint show a certain chalkiness. With the Red Dog Paint Minerals All-Natural Chalky Paint Powder in the dark tone you get a truer colour. Once painted, you seal the painted item with wax or a poly.
But here’s the kicker…it is the paint’s ability to paint supple materials such as leather, vinyl, and fabric, now you can use a paint to spruce up those dated pieces instead of having them re-upholstered which again can push up the price of the project. Style Organization now sells Red Dog in Windsor Ontario.
