Too Much Stuff or Hoarding? in Windsor Ontario Part 2 of 3

When I organize I don’t like to discard peoples belongings but if it is unhygienic, unsanitary, expired and unable to be cleaned, we have to dispose of those items. The client has to agree before we begin otherwise they would be going back into an unsafe environment. We took three full days to clear all the garbage and recycling from this one bed apartment.

Hoarders – Windsor and Essex County

Carolina clearing a hoarders debris in Windsor Ontario
Carolina clearing a hoarders debris in Windsor Ontario

There has been a lot of interest in hoarders in the news recently; The Windsor Star (see below) reported a new initiative for helping hoarders in Windsor and Essex County from the Windsor Fire Services and the Family Services of Windsor-Essex. Biz X magazine is also preparing an article on Hoarders in Windsor and Essex County for their February 2014 edition.

It is not a new phenomenon, but with TV shows and more interest in organizing and staging homes for sale, the spin-off to these popular shows has found that hoarding has become a hot topic. Generally it is mostly seniors and although it can arise from illness such as dementia, it is often because seniors find it too difficult when they become unable to care for themselves.

Style Organization has experience in helping seniors and anyone who needs help in decluttering, downsizing and organizing their homes for easier and accessible living or when moving to a retirement home or smaller residence. No project is too big or small, however when it comes to homes that have gross filth and neglect that has led to an unhealthy and dangerous living environment; especially when children and pets are involved. Usually at this point governmental agencies become involved and may call in companies that have certification, special clothing, and training to remove and clean up these hazards which often include mould, expired food, rodent, and insect infestations from bedbugs, mice, rats, squirrels, skunks, raccoons, ants, and cockroaches.

Renovation Boot Camp

What a load of rubbish!
What a load of rubbish!
A finished basement, bonus we thought, all we need to do is update a few fixtures, paint, change the flooring and well you get the picture, as all the HGTV renovation programmes illustrate so well you just don’t know what you will find until you go to change something. More demo and a big clean up, Steve my handyman really needed help so of course I said yes and for 6 hours straight with no lunch I piled it up in the garage waiting for Joe and Randy to haul it to the dump, not very green but it has to be done.

The Sleeping Beauty Garage

The walls are covered with ivy and it looks as if nobody has been in for 100 years, of course, it looks pretty but it is not so good for the stonework which is spalling in places and needs repair in others.
Update: The electricians are STILL changing the knob and tube – what a mess! all the baseboards have to be taken off and the dust with the removal of old plaster and lathe… tomorrow looks to be the worst day as they are doing the bedroom we are camped in. The plumbers fixed all the leaky taps, and pipes and are coming back again tomorrow. I have finally cleared up all the rubbish in the attic as it was garbage day today. Finally cleared out the garage and pruned some very thorny bushes that were in the way.

Moving Seniors – Rx for Clearing Houses

Debris Removal and Moving Cleans
Debris Removal and Moving Cleans

Moving seniors out of a home, this time the lady of the house was going into a care facility because of Alzheimer’s. I was told this was the reason for the downsize, they did not need to, as when I began clearing the home I kept finding duplicates and triplicates of the same books or items and realized that she has simply forgotten and purchased another one.

The house was sold, the family had taken what they wanted, the auction houses had been in, and so had friends of the family but everything and everyone  had taken longer than they thought and still there was an incredible amount of “stuff” The family had had enough so Style Organization was called as the last to attend to the house. We ended up having a tight time frame and had only two days!  We started early and stayed late. We like to donate as much as possible but with time being an issue could not donate everything so a waste bin was ordered and then a second as we ended up filling two waste bins! The first was the larger items of mattresses and box springs. On the first day everything was sorted and bagged for donations and put into the car for delivery to the charity shop. The garbage was put into the bin and as soon as one room was cleared, it was cleaned. It took two ten hours days and we worked through lunch which was just as well as it was done with 10 minutes over the clock.
